Why You Should Organize Your Sock Drawer

Clutter negatively impacts our ability to focus, not to mention our productivity.

Clutter. You’re probably not a fan of the various piles of randomness that creep up around the house. Or the junk drawer (you know you have one, and if you don’t, you’re already a step ahead of many).

But clutter happens. And here’s why you should always take time to deal with it.

The Chaos Clutter Causes

Clutter actually makes it difficult for your brain to focus. Science has shown this in studies over and over again. Like this one.

Clutter negatively impacts your life in other ways such as productivity (i.e. finding crap you need quickly).

The Sock Drawer Theory

When looking in your sock drawer, how easy is it to find what you need? Yes, we’re talking about your sock drawer but just go with it.

Here are some tips:

  • First off, are your socks paired? Always pair them.
  • Get rid of the ones you really don’t use anymore.
  • Are you overflowing with thick, fuzzy winter socks from grandma even though it’s 85 outside? Find a separate, under-the-bed type of spot for seasonal goodies so you can get in and out of there without distractions.
  • Do you use tiny nylon stockings regularly but have a hard time finding them? Stick a small container in the drawer to keep them separated (or whatever else works).
  • Keep your sock drawer organized with most used socks in the front. If black ankle socks are your thing, keep them grouped together toward the front and so on.

Now, consider these same tips but for your whole closet, then the kitchen, bathroom, and so on.

Decluttering can go a long way in decluttering the mind and make it a heck of a lot easier to do things at home like meditate, which is basically like spring cleaning for the brain.
